- Age: > 12 years |
- Severe acne resistant to standard therapy with systemic antibiotics and topical treatment, including but not limited to: |
- Nodulo-cystic acne |
- Acne conglobata |
- Acne fulminans |
- Acne at risk of permanent scarring |
MHRA Guidance Follow-Up |
- Prescribe only by a consultant dermatologist-led team |
- Assess and monitor mental health |
- Assess and monitor sexual function |
Informed Consent and Information |
- Fully inform the patient (and their family/carers if needed) about potential risks and benefits before referral to the consultant-dermatologist-led team and before prescribing isotretinoin if chosen. |
Psychological Wellbeing |
- Consider the patient's psychological wellbeing and refer to mental health services before starting treatment if appropriate. |
Potential Pregnancy |
- If pregnancy potential exists: |
- Explain the risk to a developing baby if isotretinoin is taken during pregnancy |
- Inform them about following the MHRA pregnancy prevention program |
Dosage |
- Prescribe isotretinoin for acne treatment at a standard daily dose of 0.5 to 1 mg/kg. |
