Uninvestigated dyspepsia is a very common problem and several reports put the prevalence at more than 20 % globally. This has a considerable associated health impact and The lancet reports a study in 2018 which found that about 10 % of the adult population fulfils the criteria for Rome IV functional dyspepsia criteria.
The cause can vary from benign causes as such as functional dyspepsia to life-threatening causes as cancer ( oesophageal cancer has a very poor 5 yr survival rate )
