Acute Cholecystitis

Acute cholecystitis ( ACC ) is acute gall bladder inflammation and it is one of the major complications of gallstones or cholelithiasis.

Calculous Occlusion of cystic duct by gallstones -most common cause responsible in more then 90 % of cases.

Acalculous Inspissation due to dehydration or bile stasis ( e.g 2ary to trauma or severe illness ) can cause blockage of the cystic duct. This is seen in about 5 % to 14 % of cases.

Acute cholecystitis ( ACC ) responsible for about 3 % to 10 % of all patients who present with acute abdominal pain

Acute calculous cholecytitis has a high incidence in the general population

ACC develops in up to 10 % if patients with symptomatic gallstones

1 % to 4 % of patients with known gallstones suffer biliary colic / year
