Ankle -brachial pressure index ( ABPI)

The Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) is a valuable diagnostic tool used by healthcare professionals to screen for peripheral artery disease (PAD) and assess vascular health in patients. It is calculated by comparing systolic blood pressure readings between the ankle and brachial artery, indicating the presence of stenosis in the arterial conduits between the aorta and the ankle. ABPI is crucial for patients presenting with signs and symptoms suggestive of PAD, such as absent pedal pulses, cool skin, abnormal capillary refill time, leg pain, or tissue issues, allowing for early detection and intervention. Moreover, ABPI serves as a severity indicator, with an ABPI < 0.4 signifying critical limb ischemia, a potentially life-threatening condition. It also plays a vital role in evaluating the suitability of compression treatment, especially for venous disease or ulceration, and excluding PAD in patients undergoing treatments with potential vascular complications like leg or foot surgery. This non-invasive and informative test aids in better patient care and management.
