Cystitis, commonly referred to as a bladder infection, is an inflammation of the bladder most often caused by a bacterial infection. This condition is part of a broader category of urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can affect any part of the urinary system, including the urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Although cystitis can occur in individuals of any gender and age, it is notably more prevalent in females due to anatomical differences facilitating bacterial entry into the bladder.
The condition manifests clinically with hallmark symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequency, dysuria, and suprapubic pain. While acute uncomplicated cystitis is typically a benign, self-limited condition, it can lead to recurrent episodes that impact quality of life and may require repeated courses of antibiotics, raising concerns about antibiotic resistance.
