Diamorphine, commonly known as heroin, is a powerful opioid analgesic known for its effective pain relief properties. Chemically known as diacetylmorphine or acetomorphine, and also referred to as 3,6-diacetylmorphine, it acts primarily on the central nervous system (CNS) to provide analgesia. While it is a CNS depressant, diamorphine can also induce stimulant actions such as nausea, vomiting, and miosis. Its rapid onset of action and potent analgesic effects make it particularly useful in the management of severe pain associated with surgical procedures, myocardial infarction, terminal illnesses, and for the relief of dyspnoea in acute pulmonary oedema.
