Fibroadenomas are common benign breast lesions that typically present as palpable lumps, often without any associated nipple discharge. These solid, non-cancerous tumors are most prevalent in women aged 14 to 35 but can occur at any age. Characterized by their firm, rubbery texture and well-defined borders, fibroadenomas are mobile, marble-like masses comprising both epithelial and stromal tissues. Fibroadenomas are the most common benign breast tumors, accounting for half of all breast biopsies.
Often referred to as 'breast mice' due to their high mobility, these lesions shrink after menopause and are less common in post-menopausal women. The diagnosis of fibroadenomas relies on a combination of clinical examination, breast imaging, and pathological confirmation. While they are generally benign and pose a low risk of malignancy, their palpable nature can cause significant concern and anxiety among patients.Management options include core biopsy or short-term follow-up with repeat ultrasound and breast examination.
