Folliculitis

Folliculitis is the inflammation of hair follicles, commonly caused by bacterial, fungal, or viral infections. It can also result from irritation, blockage of follicles, or physical injury. The condition presents as small, red or white, pus-filled bumps around hair follicles, often with associated itching or tenderness. Folliculitis can occur on any part of the body that has hair.


Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles that can be categorized as either superficial or deep, depending on the extent of follicular involvement.

  • Superficial Folliculitis: This type affects only the upper part of the hair follicle and typically presents as small, red, pus-filled bumps around the hair follicles. It is often mild and may resolve on its own or with minimal treatment.

  • Deep Folliculitis: In contrast, deep folliculitis involves the entire hair follicle and can lead to more severe infections, such as boils (furuncles) or carbuncles. Deep folliculitis tends to be more painful and may require more aggressive treatment.


Folliculitis can affect any part of the body that has hair, including the chest, back, buttocks, arms, and legs.
