Malaria Management in Pregnancy : Quick Glance Table ( WHO )

Each year, malaria claims the lives of more than 600,000 people globally, despite being a treatable disease. Effective case management of malaria hinges on two critical components: early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are currently the best available treatment, especially for Plasmodium falciparum malaria, the most deadly form of the disease.

The primary objective of malaria treatment is to cure the infection by rapidly and completely eliminating Plasmodium parasites from the patient's bloodstream. Achieving this not only prevents the progression of uncomplicated malaria to severe disease or death but also serves a public health goal by reducing the transmission of the infection. This, in turn, decreases the infectious reservoir and helps prevent the emergence and spread of resistance to antimalarial medications.

  • Routine Referral: Any pregnant woman with suspected or confirmed malaria should be promptly referred to appropriate healthcare services for assessment and treatment.

  • Early Treatment: Initiating treatment early in pregnancy can prevent complications such as low birth weight and maternal anemia.

  • Medication Safety: Careful selection of antimalarial medication is essential, considering the stage of pregnancy and potential risks
