Mastitis is an inflammatory condition of the breast which may or may not be accompanied by infection ( WHO 2000 )

Lactational Common condition affecting breast feeding women , also known as puerperal mastitis.

Non-lactational - Less common

:arrow_right: Lactational mastitis is a common condition with reported incidences of 10 % to 33 %

Presents mostly in the :point_right: 2nd and 3rd week post-partum with majority of cases within the 1st 12 weeks ( but can happen at any age of lactation including 2nd year )

Breast abscess is a :red_circle: severe complication of mastitis and develops in 3 to 11 % of women with mastitis.

Milk stasis Most common cause :large_orange_diamond:

Milk not removed from breast efficiently due to causes as○ breast engorged soon after delivery○ infant does not remove all the milk that is produced from part or all of the breast due to factors as :point_right: poor attachment , ineffective sucking , infrequent feeding , milk duct blockage

Overabundant milk supply

Lactating for twins or higher multiples

Infectious Mostly by pathogens which colonize the skin and gain entry through nipple into the duct system

Main etiological agents are Staphylococci...
