Prostate : examination and anatomy

Prostate examination, commonly referred to as a digital rectal exam (DRE), is a crucial procedure used to evaluate the prostate gland, which is an essential part of the male reproductive system. This examination helps in assessing the size, shape, and texture of the prostate, which can aid in the diagnosis of conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, and prostate cancer.

During the DRE, a healthcare provider inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to palpate the prostate gland, which is located just in front of the rectum. This exam can detect abnormalities of the prostate such as nodules, tenderness, or enlargement. While it may cause some discomfort, it is a brief and informative procedure that plays a significant role in men's health, especially for those over the age of 50 or those with risk factors for prostate disease.
