Stone in urinary system anywhere between the kidneys and urethra - obstructing the kidney and ureter. Nephrolithiasis or kidney stones - renal calculi. More common - ureteric calculi this is a more appropriate term ( as only when the stones pass & obstruct the ureter that they cause colic )
Acute obstruction of the urinary tract by a calculus , symptoms , pain based on degree of obstruction and not by the size of the calculus-Obstruction leads to proximal ureteral and renal pelvis dilatation , ureteral spasms ( obstructed urine flow created by the calculus ) -intense pain known as renal calculi.
Stones > 80 % contain calcium mostly in the form of calcium oxalate /phosphate
Other stones uric acid , infection stones ( magnesium ammonium phosphate) , cystine stones
Colic is usually related to stones but may also happen due to other causes as
interventions as ureteroscopy , stent removal

blockage from chronic sources as ureteropelvic junction obstruction ( UPJO ) , cancer of the prostate , cervix , pelvis , retroperitoneal fibrosis
