Syringe Driver : prescribing guide

Syringe drivers, also known as continuous subcutaneous infusion devices, play a key role in palliative care by delivering medications like analgesics and sedatives to manage symptoms in terminally ill patients. These devices allow for continuous drug administration, improving patient comfort, especially when oral routes are not possible due to nausea, vomiting, or reduced consciousness (Meesters et al., 2022; Mitchell & Elbourne, 2020).


However, challenges persist in their use. Some healthcare providers, including general practitioners, lack confidence in prescribing and managing syringe drivers, which can impact the quality of care (Magee & Koffman, 2015; Williams et al., 2017). Additionally, the complexity of medication compatibility requires a deep understanding among professionals (Baker et al., 2018).


On an emotional level, families often report improved quality of life for their loved ones with the use of syringe drivers. Still, effective communication and education about their purpose are critical to ensuring patient and family support (West, 2014; Cruickshank et al., 2010).
